Watch the intent icon and windup before responding. A basic attack, charged attack and special do not have the same interaction with your protection.

Combat approach
Create space before the enemy’s close-range attack lands. Spend the recovery window on a skill you can finish safely, then reassess your distance.
Barrier can provide breathing room against normal hits, but charged attacks and enemy specials break it. Use evasion and positioning for those threats rather than assuming the shield will absorb them.
