Primary Elements Guide

Choose the element that changes a skill in the way your build needs.

What a Primary Element does

A Primary Element normally occupies a card’s primary slot and changes the way that skill works. It can alter damage, add a status, improve protection, or give the attack a new utility effect. The result depends on the skill: Hydro on one card is not a promise that every Hydro card performs the same action.

Primary Elements do not level up. They remain Primary Elements without a tier numeral. Raising a skill’s card level is a separate upgrade, while combining primaries creates a fusion result. Most cards also have a separate slot for a Super Element, allowing the primary variant and a triggered trait to work together.

The seven Primary Elements

Use the element identities below to narrow down a choice, then read the specific variant on the card you intend to use. The card’s current effect is more useful than an element’s broad theme when deciding a difficult reward.

ElementGeneral identityTypical question
HydroSustain, suppression and slowingDo I need more recovery or a slower enemy?
PyroBurn and escalating damageCan I keep pressure on the target?
GeoProtection, stun and guard breakingDo I need a safer opening or a way through defense?
AeroMovement, displacement and weakeningCan better positioning control this fight?
PhumiEmpowerment, purification and restorationDo I need cleansing or a stronger support window?
KaliPoison, attrition and executionCan I exploit repeated attacks or prolonged pressure?
CosmicDefense bypass and unusual attack behaviorDoes this particular Cosmic variant solve my problem?

When elements become available

Hydro, Pyro, Geo and Aero form the early element pool. Phumi and Kali require a clear and Ascension 1. Ordinary reward eligibility checks both the clear requirement and the selected Ascension, so returning to Ascension 0 does not make every later element available there.

Cosmic has no weight in the ordinary primary-drop pool. Fuse Phumi and Kali to make it, or obtain it through an eligible special source such as the Cosmic Well. Later boss element choices can also include it. Cosmic enemies have their own progression gate, so the element you can craft and the enemies you can meet are not the same availability question.

Cosmic also has a unique slot choice. Its primary-slot use gives the skill a Cosmic variant; its Super Element-slot use grants an extra effective card level. One copy fills one chosen slot. If you remove Cosmic from the Super Element slot, it returns to your bag as a Cosmic Primary Element.

Check the enemy’s element

Hydro has advantage over Pyro; Pyro over Geo; Geo over Aero; Aero over Hydro. The reverse pairing is resisted. Phumi and Kali each gain advantage against the other, while Cosmic gains advantage against every non-Cosmic primary. All other unspecified pairings are neutral.

Advantage is useful, but it is not the only reason to choose a variant. A skill that provides a needed heal, control effect or guard break may be the better choice even when a different element has a favorable multiplier. Build around what the card actually accomplishes.

Before you commit an element

Inspect the preview and check three things: what the skill now does, which enemy or self status it applies, and how that effect connects to your next card. If you are using a triggered Super Element, confirm that the new primary still supports its condition.

A neutral card is not broken or unfinished. Un-imbued cards receive the Focused baseline bonus, and their original behavior may already suit the deck. Spend an element when its variant improves a useful part of your plan, rather than filling every empty slot automatically.

Worlds and weather influence the element pool. Adapt to what the run offers instead of waiting indefinitely for one exact recipe. A functioning early build is more valuable than a collection of materials that never becomes a usable card.
